Reuters —Senegal President Macky Sall said on Thursday that April 2 will be the end of his mandate as president of the West African nation. His announcement came after the country’s Constitutional Council, the highest election authority, ruled last week that a 10-month postponement of the vote was unlawful. Sall said however that he cannot issue a decree to hold the election before a national dialogue takes place. He said that candidates who had not been approved by the Constitutional Council would also be invited to the dialogue. “If we find consensus, I will issue the decree immediately to set the date; if consensus is not found, I will refer the matter to the Constitutional Council,” Sall said.

CNN —The United Nations is “deeply concerned” about the tense situation in Senegal, following the suspension of the country’s presidential election that was slated for February 25, Spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Liz Throssell said Tuesday. On Tuesday, the French Foreign Ministry said that Senegal must hold a new presidential election “as soon as possible” and refrain from disproportionate force when dealing with protests. “France offers its condolences to the relatives of those who died during the demonstrations in Senegal in recent days. The US also previously said it was “deeply concerned” by the moves to delay the election and urged the government to move forward with the ballot. A West African delegation from regional bloc ECOWAS arrived in Senegal on Monday to mediate on the escalating political crisis, ahead of fresh protests planned for this week, Senegalese state media RTS reported.

By Diadie Ba and Bate FelixDAKAR (Reuters) - The Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) on Friday said it had officially requested a postponement of the Feb. 25 presidential election, citing incidents it alleged had compromised the transparency and integrity of the vote. PDS is the former ruling party of Abdoulaye Wade. Their candidate, Wade's son Karim, was disqualified from the race to succeed President Macky Sall over his supposed dual nationality. In a statement, PDS listed concerns with the constitutional court's decision-making, the elimination of candidates and other issues that it said had derailed the race. The push for a postponement "is part of our desire to preserve the integrity and transparency of the process," it said.

Sporadic violent protests have broken out across Senegal since opposition leader Ousmane Sonko was detained for alleged rape in 2021. Sonko's supporters say this is a tactic to bar him from the February presidential poll, which the government denies. Sall on Wednesday welcomed members of various parties, religious leaders and civil society to a multi-day national dialogue aimed at easing tensions and fostering dialogue. As a result, neither was able to run for president in 2019. Khalifa Sall attended Wednesday's dialogue and said he hoped the president's potential third term bid was up for discussion.
